Blue sheep hunting is a legal and guided hunting trip in western Nepal. This trip is operated under the surveillance of the government. You will be hunting sheep also known as bharal in the Dhorpatan Hunting Reserve. The whole trip lasts for 15 days. It includes everything from when you arrive in Kathmandu to the day you leave.
Blue sheep are not very big. The male blue sheep or rams usually weigh between 60 and 75 kilograms and are about 90 centimeters tall. What makes them special is their horns. They have curved horns that go outward and backward and they can be up to 70 centimeters long. The blue sheep have a coat that is blue-grey on their back and white on their belly. They also have markings on their face and legs. They like to live in groups on rocky hills and steep cliffs where they feel safe from animals that might hurt them. This makes it hard to hunt them because they live in places that are hard to reach.
When we go on this hunt, the main you will be do is looking for blue sheep. We will use binoculars and scopes to find them. Once you find one, we will plan a way to sneak near it without being seen or heard. This can take an hour and might not even work if the blue sheep move or the wind changes. You will usually take a shot from a long distance depending on how close you can get. This kind of hunting is work and you have to be patient.
Nepal is one of the countries where you can hunt blue sheep legally. Dhorpatan is a place where the government allows controlled hunting to help take care of the area and the animals. The money that hunters pay goes to help the reserve and the people who live around it. This is not like a safari it is a real adventure in the mountains. The place where you will be hunting is very beautiful Greenland with mountain views.
This trip is for people who have hunted before and are in shape. You need to be familiar with being at altitude and walking for a long time. This is not a trip for beginners. You will have to drive on mountain roads and walk for hours before you even start hunting. You need to be able to carry a rifle and be okay with not shooting anything for a time. If you are up, for the challenge you will get a trophy and an experience that not many people have.
The government of Nepal only gives out a number of permits to hunt blue sheep each year. You have to go with a guide and have the right papers to hunt. If you want to take the trophy home you need to get papers before you leave Nepal. If you do not do this you could get in trouble. If you book with us, you don’t have to worry about all this paper work. We will help you with all of this and make your trip smooth.
There are two good times to go. These are October to November and March to April.
During October and November, the skies are very clear. The monsoon has just left so everything is clean. You can see far the weather is cool and the animals are moving around a lot. This is usually the time to go.
March and April are also good. The snow is melting so the animals are coming down to areas. It is easier to get and the weather is nice. Not many people go during this time but it is still a good time to go.
You should not go from December to February because there is much snow. You should not go from May to September because of the monsoon. It is very hard to travel and camp during this time.
This is not a simple trip. It is an adventure that takes a lot of planning. You have to be patient in shape and good at hunting. What makes it special is that it is hard. Not many people get to hunt in the mountains. The mountains are beautiful. The people are nice. If you want something from hunting in Africa or North America hunting blue sheep, in Nepal is a good choice. It is a challenge and you get to see some amazing things.
