For those wishing to trek Helambu, the journey can commence either from Sundarijal or Melamchi. Sundarijal is approximately 26 km from central Kathmandu, while Melamchi Bazaar is 80 km away. Initially, you will drive from Kathmandu to Sundarijal and begin the hike the same day toward the village of Chisapani. The name Chisapani is derived from the Nepali words “Chiso Pani,” meaning cold water. Along the way, you will pass through Shivapuri National Park and Mulkharkha, a Tamang settlement, en route to Chisapani.
The next day, you continue your trek toward Khutumsang after enjoying the view from the Chisapani viewpoint. It takes around 5 hours to reach Khutumsang. During the trek, you will walk beside farmlands and meadows, enjoying the beautiful views of the Langtang mountain range.
Then, the trek proceeds to Tharepati from Khutumsang, offering breathtaking mountain vistas amidst rhododendron and oak forests. You can stay overnight at Tharepati and continue your trek toward Tarkeghyang the following morning, on your fourth day of trekking. On the fifth day, you conclude your trek by walking around 4 hours to reach Sermanthang village. From there, you can take a local bus to Melamchi and drive back to Kathmandu.
The Helambu Trek is considered an easy trek. However, it typically requires an average of 6 to 7 hours of walking each day. If you have ordinary physical fitness, this level of activity should be manageable. Therefore, no prior trekking experience is needed for the Helambu Trek.
The best months to trek in Helambu are from March to May and from September to December. During these months, the weather is usually sunny and the skies are clear, providing spectacular mountain views. Temperatures are cool and moderate, making for comfortable trekking conditions. Additionally, the trails are often beautifully adorned with blooming rhododendron forests.
During the trek, accommodation will be provided in tea houses or lodges. It is important to note that star-level hotels are not available in this area. We will arrange both food and accommodation in these teahouses.
Standard Meals – Breakfast, lunch, and dinner will be served during the trek. You will have a few meal options to choose from. The menu typically features a mix of traditional local, Asian, and Western cuisine. However, as we approach more remote areas, the variety available on the menu will become more limited.
