The Upper Mustang Mountain Bike Tour combines challenging Himalayan cycling with exceptional cultural exploration.
Starting and ending in Kathmandu, the journey takes you from the busy Kathmandu Valley toward the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain region and into the rain-shadow landscape of Mustang. As you travel north of Kagbeni, the scenery changes dramatically into an arid, Tibetan-style plateau of red and ochre cliffs, wind-carved valleys, ancient caves and centuries-old Buddhist settlements.
The highlight of the journey is Lo Manthang, the historic walled settlement and cultural heart of Upper Mustang. Nepal Tourism Board describes the region as one of the country’s most culturally preserved Himalayan destinations.

The Upper Mustang Mountain Bike Tour is an 11-day adventure from Kathmandu into the remote Himalayan landscape of Mustang. The journey combines mountain biking, Tibetan-influenced culture, ancient monasteries, dramatic desert-like landscapes and the historic walled city of Lo Manthang.
Yes. Upper Mustang offers a spectacular and challenging mountain biking environment, with jeep tracks, gravel roads, rocky trails, steep climbs and descents. However, it is more demanding than a typical recreational cycling holiday and is best suited to riders with reasonable mountain biking experience.
The exact highest riding point depends on the final route and weather conditions. The Upper Mustang region includes high passes and settlements around 3,000–4,000 metres, with Lo Manthang at approximately 3,840 metres.
A good level of physical fitness is recommended. Riders should be comfortable cycling several hours per day and handling uphill climbs, rough surfaces, wind, dust and high-altitude conditions.
It is not recommended for complete beginners. Basic mountain biking experience is strongly recommended because the route includes rough terrain, altitude, long riding days and technical sections.
Yes. You may bring your own mountain bike, provided it is suitable for rough and high-altitude terrain and has been professionally serviced before the trip.
A quality hardtail or full-suspension mountain bike is recommended. The choice depends on your riding style, experience and the final route conditions.
A suitable mountain bike can be arranged as part of the package, depending on the selected package and availability. Please confirm the bike model, size and specifications at the time of booking.
Yes. Upper Mustang is a restricted area of Nepal, and special government permission is required. The official Department of Immigration currently lists the Upper Mustang permit at USD 50 per person per day.
Foreign visitors require the appropriate restricted-area permit and must follow current government regulations. Dream Himalayas arranges the necessary permits and logistics before entering the restricted area.
Accommodation is generally in comfortable hotels, lodges and locally operated guesthouses. Facilities become simpler as you travel deeper into Upper Mustang. Twin-sharing accommodation is normally provided, with private rooms available where possible at additional cost.
reakfast is included according to the package. Lunch and dinner can normally be purchased at local hotels and lodges unless specifically included in your selected package.
Yes. Water is available at villages and lodges, but riders should carry a reusable bottle or hydration bladder. We recommend using filtered or properly treated water rather than relying on untreated natural water sources.
Support transportation is arranged according to the group size, route and logistics. A support vehicle may carry luggage, equipment and spare parts and can provide assistance where road access permits.
Our team carries basic bicycle tools and essential repair supplies. Our guide/support staff will assist with mechanical problems. Riders should also carry bicycle-specific spare parts because specialist bike services are limited in remote Mustang.
Your guide will monitor the group and help assess symptoms. If necessary, the itinerary may be adjusted, the rider may descend to a lower altitude, or transportation and medical assistance may be arranged. Travel insurance with appropriate emergency evacuation coverage is strongly recommended.
The main recommended seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November). Upper Mustang lies in the Himalayan rain shadow, so it can also be considered during parts of the monsoon season, although conditions can vary. Nepal Tourism Board specifically notes Upper Mustang's rain-shadow climate as a reason it can be visited during the rainy season.
Bring appropriate mountain biking clothing, a helmet, gloves, cycling glasses, waterproof clothing, warm layers, personal medication, sunscreen, a hydration system, spare bike parts, and waterproof bags. A detailed equipment list is provided above.
Yes. Dream Himalayas can customize the itinerary according to your fitness level, riding experience, travel dates, group size, preferred accommodation, riding distance and available time. Additional acclimatization or cultural exploration days can also be considered.
Dream Himalayas Treks & Expedition is a Nepal-based adventure company with local Himalayan experience and a strong focus on personalized service. Our team handles permits, accommodation, transportation, biking logistics and local coordination so you can concentrate on enjoying the ride.
